Transition to democracy
Romania is determined to use its own experience in the transition to a democracy and market economy in helping the partner states who are undergoing the same process. As such, supporting the transition to democracy is a priority sector for Romania’s development cooperation programme. In order to support this process, the line institutions are financing projects in fields such as: consolidation of civil society, anti-corruption, peace and security, public order, anti-discrimination and gender equality.
RoAid’s support in helping the transition to democracy of partner states has been significant. In 2014, RoAid’s contribution in the field of government and civil society has been of EUR 2.3 mil. (3.88% of the bilateral assistance offered by Romania), of which 74% were directed in the field of public policy and administrative management, 12% in the field of elections, 4% for democratic participation and the consolidation of civil society and 4% in the field of anticorruption.
In geographical terms,
the largest share of the assistance directed towards government and civil society was directed to the Republic of Moldova (EUR 2.1 mil.), followed by Ukraine
(EUR 75,000) and Georgia (EUR 63,000).
At the same time, contributions in the field of government and civil society amounted to 7% of the MFA contribution from its own budget in 2014.
